As the world observes World Sustainability Day, Epson says it is highlighting how sustainability is being embedded across its products, operations, supply chain and community initiatives, with a focus on reducing resource use, cutting emissions and encouraging more responsible consumption.

In a statement dated 27 Oct 2026, the company said sustainability is a core part of its product development, guided by what it describes as the Japanese principle of “Sho-Sho-Sei”, which it says reflects a commitment to creating technology that is efficient, compact and precise.

Printer features aimed at reducing waste and power use

Epson pointed to its EcoTank printers, which it says use high-capacity, refillable ink tanks to reduce waste linked to single-use cartridges. The company claimed that one set of refillable ink bottles can replace up to 79 traditional ink cartridges, citing its calculations.

On energy use, Epson said its Heat-Free Technology can reduce power consumption by up to 96% compared with traditional laser printers, based on comparisons using product specifications and test data referenced in the release.

The company also referenced technology it says is designed to support more resource-efficient paper use and recycling. This includes Dry Fibre Technology, which Epson said breaks down paper into fibres without dissolving it in water, and PaperLab, which it said uses the technology to turn wastepaper into new paper with minimal additional water required.

Decarbonisation targets and renewable power

Epson said these developments form part of what it described as a wider decarbonisation strategy under its Environmental Vision, which it said aims for the company to become carbon-negative and underground resource-free by 2050.

Among progress milestones it highlighted, Epson said it became the first manufacturer in Japan to switch to 100% renewable electricity across all its domestic sites in 2021.

The release also discussed measures aimed at emissions across Epson’s value chain. It said the company has increased shipping efficiency through the use of high-cube containers, improving loading capacity by 14.3% and reducing the number of shipments required.

Epson said it has partnered with Maersk to use alternative fuels on key shipping routes, including biodiesel and green methanol. Epson added that it estimates the first year of the initiative could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 230 tonnes, and that a new east-coast shipping route to North America has reduced overland transit emissions by a further 320 tonnes.

Community initiatives and ReCreators competition

Epson said its sustainability work extends into local communities where it operates. It noted that in June, six students from Saudi Arabia and the UAE were recognised for creating sustainable artwork from recycled materials as part of the company’s ReCreators competition.

The company said the ReCreators competition was launched as part of its sustainability campaign during World Sustainability Day last October.

Husam Alzughayyar, Epson Country Manager Saudi Arabia and Head of Sales, UAE, said Epson’s approach includes reducing the environmental impact of its own operations while using innovation to help customers, communities and partners make more responsible use of resources.

Epson added that, across the Middle East, it is seeing growing awareness of sustainability and said it plans to support that progress through technology and local initiatives.
