On 28 October 2026, SAP (NYSE: SAP) announced a set of AI updates for developers and enterprises at its annual SAP TechEd conference. The company said the changes build on its Joule Studio and Joule Work offerings and its SAP Business AI Platform, with an emphasis on tools for building AI agents, governance controls, and deeper integration with enterprise data.

Joule Studio and Joule Work updates for agent development

According to SAP, Joule Studio and Joule Work are being enhanced to support the development and execution of AI agents across the SAP portfolio and beyond. The company said its SAP Business AI Platform is intended to provide a single place to build, contextualize, and govern AI across SAP and third-party environments.

For developers and business users, SAP said Joule Studio offers no-code and pro-code capabilities to build and extend agents, with access to more than 70 AI models. The company also said that customers in an early adopter program for Joule Studio can design and run n8n workflows inside Joule Studio, with broader availability planned.

SAP further stated that SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Knowledge Graph are used to ground agents in “trusted business data and context,” helping organizations select models for specific use cases and manage AI value and consumption. SAP also reiterated a data privacy position, saying customers’ data remains their data and that SAP does not share customer data with anyone to train or improve large language models.

Governance and interoperability for scaling enterprise AI

In its announcement, SAP highlighted governance features aimed at scaling AI in regulated enterprise environments. The company said it is strengthening controls intended to manage AI behavior, model usage, and spend.

SAP also described new capabilities for Joule Work intended to improve how agents handle complex, multistep business processes. The company cited open protocols including Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP) and said these updates are designed to help agents plan and orchestrate steps across enterprise systems.

For interoperability, SAP said a governed agent gateway will enable third-party agents to invoke Joule Agents under enforced access control. SAP also introduced what it called an SAP Enterprise AI Gateway, which it said is designed to centralize management of AI traffic across an enterprise, including authentication, policy enforcement, routing, monitoring, usage tracking, and auditing. An “AI Governance Assistant” was also described as a tool intended to help customers meet compliance requirements for the EU AI Act.

Tabular AI model deployment in space via HPE

Beyond enterprise software, SAP said it announced its latest tabular AI model, SAP-RPT-2.0. The company stated the model will expand beyond classification and regression to support anomaly and outlier detection and embeddings-based analysis for structured data.

SAP also said it plans to introduce a new SAP-RPT-TS model to predict values across time-indexed business metrics for forecasting use cases, referencing the SAP Integrated Business Planning solution without requiring custom machine learning.

In partnership with HPE, SAP said it is deploying SAP-RPT on the HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 aboard the International Space Station (ISS). SAP described this as an edge-compute validation of the model and said it is planned to run onboard the ISS to support anomaly triage, predict issues before failures escalate, reconstruct missing sensor values from historical data, and generate explainable mission-health reports for astronauts and ground teams, without requiring data to be sent back to Earth for analysis.

Data platform integrations and enterprise lakehouse expansion

SAP said it is positioning SAP Business Data Cloud as a foundation for “autonomous” enterprise workflows. The company described an Ontology Manager capability in SAP Business Data Cloud intended to support AI-native ontology authoring across SAP and third-party data.

In the announcement, SAP also said it is expanding its lakehouse capabilities with Dremio, including native support for Apache Iceberg and Apache Polaris and a high-performance federated query engine intended to enable unified data access without moving or copying data. SAP said it is expanding its partnership with Databricks, bringing data engineering and enterprise AI capabilities into SAP Business Data Cloud as “SAP Databricks,” and referenced additional components such as Lakeflow, Agent Bricks, Unity Gateway, and Lakebase.

Partner ecosystem and ongoing developer enablement

SAP said it highlighted partner announcements at SAP TechEd including a collaboration with Intel described as bridging enterprise workflows and autonomous robots. The company also referenced new solution extensions with DocuSign, Parloa, and Redwood intended to support end-to-end process execution.

Separately, SAP said it is continuing developer enablement leading up to SAP TechEd, including Devtoberfest and additional reference architectures, tutorials, and hands-on opportunities at the event and online.

SAP CTO Philipp Herzig said TechEd reflects a shift from AI learning a business to running it, and that Joule Work places intent into action while Joule Studio supports building and extending agents.
